Bubbling mud pools, clouds of steam, and natural hot springs. This is New Zealand's most dynamic geothermal area. 34% of the population in the area is Māori. There are five main geothermal areas - Whakarewarewa, Tikitere, Waimangu, Wai-O-Tapu and Orakei Korako - that can be experienced up-close.
