Overview
The peninsula is part of the crater wall of a large, long-extinct volcano. A place full of secluded bays, sandy beaches and clifftop vistas. It's also home to the South Island's most accessible diversity of wildlife, including albatross, penguins, fur seals and sea lions.

They can fly for up to 160 hours at a time by frequently locking their wings to save energy
They have glands above their nasal passages to help them expel excess sea salt taken in while feeding
Yellow-eyed Penguin
Hoiho [māori]
The world's rarest and most ancient penguins
They usually nest on a slope in forest, scrub or on beaches facing the sea and not in visual sight of each other
Fur Seal
Kekeno [māori]
Fur seal whiskers catch the vibrations of prey swimming nearby
Pups are born in the summer and often leave their parents at 9 months old
